Globale Nahrungsmittelkrise 2007/08 — Dürre in wichtigen Exportländern, kombiniert mit Exportbeschränkungen mehrerer Regierungen zum Schutz der Inlandsversorgung und wachsender Nachfrage nach Biokraftstoff-Pflanzen, trieb Weizen, Reis und Mais binnen etwa einem Jahr auf damalige Rekordpreise — und löste in über 30 Ländern Lebensmittelunruhen aus.

Über Reis

Das Grundnahrungsmittel für mehr als die Hälfte der Weltbevölkerung, angebaut hauptsächlich in Asien, mit Thailand, Vietnam und Indien als führenden Exporteuren. Anders als Weizen und Mais wird der meiste Reis im Anbauland selbst verzehrt, sodass der weltweite Handel im Verhältnis zur Produktion gering ist — was Exportbeschränkungen, wie Indiens periodische Exportverbote, ungewöhnlich stark auf die Weltmarktpreise durchschlagen lässt, wie sich 2007/08 zeigte, als eine Welle von Exportbeschränkungen mehrerer asiatischer Erzeuger die Weltmarktpreise für Reis binnen weniger als einem Jahr etwa verdreifachte. Langkörniger Indica-Reis (die international gehandelte Sorte, die diese Seite erfasst) und der in Ostasien bevorzugte kurzkörnige Japonica-Reis werden weitgehend getrennt gehandelt und bepreist.
