Crise alimentaire mondiale de 2007-2008 — La sécheresse dans de grands pays exportateurs, combinée aux restrictions à l'exportation imposées par plusieurs gouvernements pour protéger l'approvisionnement intérieur et à la demande croissante de cultures pour biocarburants, a poussé le blé, le riz et le maïs vers ce qui était alors des records en environ un an - déclenchant des émeutes de la faim dans plus de 30 pays.

À propos du riz

L'aliment de base de plus de la moitié de la population mondiale, cultivé principalement en Asie, avec la Thaïlande, le Vietnam et l'Inde comme principaux exportateurs. Contrairement au blé et au maïs, la majeure partie du riz est consommée dans le pays où il est cultivé, si bien que le commerce mondial reste limité par rapport à la production — ce qui rend les restrictions à l'exportation, comme les interdictions périodiques de l'Inde, particulièrement perturbatrices pour les prix mondiaux, comme on l'a vu en 2007-2008, quand une vague de restrictions à l'exportation chez plusieurs producteurs asiatiques a presque triplé les prix mondiaux du riz en moins d'un an. Les variétés indica à grain long (le type échangé à l'international et suivi ici) et les variétés japonica à grain court privilégiées en Asie de l'Est se négocient et se cotent largement à part.
