Notable price events
- 2007-08 global food price crisis — Drought in major exporting countries, combined with several governments restricting exports to protect domestic supply and growing demand for biofuel crops, pushed wheat, rice and corn to what were then record prices within about a year - triggering food riots in over 30 countries.
- India's rice export ban, July 2023 — On 20 July 2023 India, the world's largest rice exporter, banned exports of non-basmati white rice - about a quarter of its rice exports - to hold down domestic prices ahead of an El Niño year. The Thai 5% broken benchmark jumped to its highest in about 15 years, above $650 a tonne.
"World" is the global benchmark price (World Bank Pink Sheet, monthly since 1960, where available). This commodity has no official global benchmark price, so "World (average)" is a simple, unweighted mean across whichever FAOSTAT-reporting countries had a producer price that year, computed by agri.markets — not a production-weighted figure, and not an official FAO statistic. Options for India, China, Brazil, Mexico, West Africa and other countries are monthly wholesale prices from national sources, republished by FAO's GIEWS price monitoring tool - for India the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, in INR per 100 kg (one quintal). About Rice
The staple food for more than half the world's population, grown mostly in Asia, with Thailand, Vietnam and India as leading exporters. Unlike wheat and corn, most rice is consumed in the country where it's grown, so global trade is thin relative to production — which makes export restrictions, such as India's periodic bans, unusually disruptive to world prices, as seen in 2007-08 when a wave of export curbs across several Asian producers roughly tripled world rice prices in under a year. Long-grain indica varieties (the type traded internationally and tracked here) and short-grain japonica varieties preferred in East Asia are priced and traded largely separately.
