Über Sorghum

Ein trockenheitstolerantes Getreide, hauptsächlich als Viehfutter genutzt, in manchen Regionen auch als Lebensmittel und für Bioethanol. Die USA, Nigeria und Mexiko sind die größten Produzenten, auch Äthiopien und Indien bauen in großem Umfang an. China ist für ein sonst eher als Futtermittel wahrgenommenes Getreide ein ungewöhnlich wichtiger Käufer geworden — die chinesische Nachfrage nach Sorghum für Baijiu, die im Land dominierende Getreidespirituose, sowie als Maisersatz in der Futterration machte es zeitweise zu einem der größten einzelnen US-Exportziele. Es ersetzt Mais in der Tierfutterration weitgehend, weshalb die Preise diesem eng folgen.
