About Sorghum

A drought-tolerant cereal used mainly as livestock feed, with human food and bioethanol uses in some regions. The US, Nigeria and Mexico are the largest producers, with Ethiopia and India also major growers. China has become an unusually important buyer for a crop otherwise associated with feed - Chinese demand for sorghum used in baijiu, the country's dominant grain spirit, and as a corn substitute in feed rations has at times made it one of the largest single US export destinations. It substitutes closely with corn in animal feed rations, so prices tend to track it closely.
