About this data

EU options are the European Commission's own weekly reference prices; "European Union" is the Commission's own published EU-wide average, not a figure computed by agri.markets. Currency conversion uses monthly ECB reference rates since 1999 (some currencies joined later) — for comparison, not precise historical FX accounting.

About Butter

The European Union is the world’s largest butter producer, and this site tracks the EU Commission’s own weekly reference price, averaged across the major dairies of each member state. Because processors can shift raw milk between butter, cheese and milk powder depending on which pays best at the time, a strong butter price often means processors are pulling milk away from those other products rather than that milk itself has become scarce.
