About Sugar

Produced from sugarcane (mainly Brazil, India, Thailand) and sugar beet (mainly the EU) — two crops grown in entirely different climates, converging on the same commodity. Brazil's ethanol industry uses the same cane crop, so sugar prices are tied to Brazilian ethanol and fuel economics — cane can be diverted toward sugar or ethanol depending on which is more profitable at the time. Trade is also unusually shaped by policy: the US and EU both run tariff-rate quota systems that cap how much sugar can enter at low duty, which is a large part of why the price you'd pay in the US or EU differs so much from the world benchmark tracked here.
