Russia's invasion of Ukraine — Russia's February 2022 invasion cut off two of the world's largest wheat and corn exporters and most of its sunflower oil supply almost overnight, while sanctions and blocked Black Sea shipping routes hit Russian fertilizer exports too - sending prices sharply higher within days across all four commodities at once, a rare case of one event moving so many markets simultaneously.

About Sunflower Oil

A major cooking oil, especially in Europe, Russia and Central Asia. Russia and Ukraine together supply well over half of world exports, which is why the war in Ukraine caused a sharp price spike and supply scramble from 2022 onward as buyers switched to substitutes like soybean and canola oil - Black Sea port blockades and shipping insurance risk mattered as much as any actual production loss in driving that spike. Prized in much of Europe for its light flavor and high smoke point relative to other seed oils. Also used in cosmetics and, to a lesser extent, biodiesel.
