African swine fever in China — African swine fever wiped out an estimated 40-55% of China's pig herd by late 2019 - roughly 250 million animals - tripling Chinese pork prices and collapsing the country's demand for the corn and soybean meal used to feed them, a rare case of a livestock disease moving grain markets more than weather did that year.

About Pork

Tracked via the EU's official weekly pig carcass reference price (Class E, the EU's standard EUROP grading benchmark). Germany, Spain, France and Poland are the largest EU producers; China is by far the world's largest pork producer and consumer, though its domestic prices aren't covered here. Prices are driven by feed costs (corn and soybean meal), herd cycles, and disease outbreaks like African swine fever, which has repeatedly forced large-scale culls across Europe and Asia.
