About Fish Meal
Ground, dried fish — mainly small pelagic species like anchovy — processed into a high-protein feed ingredient for aquaculture and livestock. Peru is by far the largest producer and exporter; catch quotas and El Niño-driven disruptions to the Peruvian anchovy fishery make this one of the more volatile prices tracked here. Soybean meal has displaced much of fish meal's older role as a general-purpose feed protein on cost grounds, but fish meal remains hard to substitute for shrimp and high-value farmed fish species, whose growth performance still depends on the marine-specific amino acids it provides.
