Price Chart
How this year compares, month by month, to the typical pattern of recent years for the selected region.
This commodity has no official global benchmark price, so "World (average)" is a simple, unweighted mean across whichever FAOSTAT-reporting countries had a producer price that year, computed by agri.markets — not a production-weighted figure, and not an official FAO statistic. Canadian province options are Statistics Canada producer prices (monthly); "Canada (average)" is a simple, unweighted mean across reporting provinces, computed by agri.markets — not a production-weighted figure. Currency conversion uses monthly ECB reference rates since 1999 (some currencies joined later) — for comparison, not precise historical FX accounting. "Inflation-adjusted (real)" rescales each historical price to the purchasing power of the most recent month using the US CPI-U (Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers, not seasonally adjusted) — applied the same way regardless of which currency a price is displayed in, since CPI-U measures general US price levels, not an exchange rate. A rough, standard way to compare prices across decades, not a substitute for a commodity-specific or country-specific deflator.
About Rapeseed (Canola)
A major oilseed grown worldwide as rapeseed and crushed into vegetable oil (cooking oil, biodiesel) and meal (animal feed) — the same dual-use pattern as soybeans. Canada, China, India, the EU and Australia are the largest producers; "canola" specifically is the low-acid variety bred in Canada, now also grown in Australia, and is what most of the crop traded internationally is. The EU's renewable-fuel blending targets have made it one of the largest buyers of rapeseed oil for biodiesel, pulling European demand well beyond what its own domestic harvest supplies. Prices move with global vegetable oil markets — competing directly with soybean and palm oil — and with growing conditions in the major producing regions; the ICE Canada futures contract in Winnipeg is the main price benchmark for the crop. This site defaults to Canada's own producer price rather than a world figure, since no institution publishes a genuine global rapeseed/canola price series - the World Bank, IMF and Eurostat all track rapeseed oil, but never the seed itself.
