About Tobacco

A cash crop grown for cigarettes and other tobacco products. China, India, Brazil and the US are the largest producers. Global demand has been on a slow structural decline for decades as smoking rates fall in wealthier countries under public-health campaigns and regulation (including the WHO's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, one of the most widely ratified treaties in UN history) - growth in some developing-country markets partly offsets that decline, but doesn't reverse it. Tobacco has no single global benchmark the way grains do, so the price tracked here is the US import unit value — an average price across all tobacco entering the US.
