About Tea

The world's most-consumed beverage crop after water. China and India are the largest producers, mostly for domestic consumption; Kenya is the largest exporter, followed by China and Sri Lanka. Most tea is still sold the traditional way, through physical auctions where buyers bid on lots by sample and taste before purchase, rather than on a futures exchange the way grains are - the price tracked here is the average across the three main auction markets (Mombasa, Kolkata and Colombo). Growing demand for bottled and ready-to-drink tea in packaged-beverage markets has added a newer source of bulk demand alongside traditional loose-leaf consumption.
