About Sunflower Seed

The seed of the sunflower, grown mainly for its oil (the seeds contain roughly 40-50% oil) and for sunflower meal, a protein feed; a smaller share of large-seeded varieties is sold as a snack. Russia and Ukraine together grew more than half of the world’s crop in 2024 (FAOSTAT), yet export very little seed: both crush it at home and sell the oil and meal instead, helped by export duties on the raw seed. International seed trade therefore runs mostly within Europe - Romania, Bulgaria, France and Hungary are large growers and exporters at the same time. Standard (linoleic) and high-oleic varieties trade at different prices; this site tracks the standard grade. Prices follow sunflower oil and the wider vegetable oil complex, and the weather around the Black Sea, where summer droughts such as 2024’s can cut yields sharply.
