- African swine fever in China — African swine fever wiped out an estimated 40-55% of China's pig herd by late 2019 - roughly 250 million animals - tripling Chinese pork prices and collapsing the country's demand for the corn and soybean meal used to feed them, a rare case of a livestock disease moving grain markets more than weather did that year.

About Soybean Meal
The protein-rich byproduct left after soybean oil is pressed out — the world's dominant animal feed protein, especially for poultry and pork. Argentina, the US and Brazil are the largest exporters. Meal typically accounts for the larger share of a crushed soybean's total value, not oil, even though oil gets most of the attention - which means feed demand growth in Asia's poultry and pork industries, more than any food or fuel trend, is what really drives how many soybeans get crushed in the first place. Prices move with livestock feed demand and the crush margin relative to raw soybeans and soybean oil.
