About Cotton

The dominant natural fiber for textiles, grown mainly in China, India, the US and Brazil. Prices compete with synthetic fibers made from oil, and move with global apparel demand, planting decisions relative to competing crops like soybeans, and weather in major growing regions. China further complicates the picture by holding a large state cotton reserve for economic stability, which it can release onto or withhold from the domestic market largely independent of that year's harvest - a policy lever most other commodities on this site don't have.
