Notable price events

  • Russia's invasion of Ukraine — Russia's February 2022 invasion cut off two of the world's largest wheat and corn exporters and most of its sunflower oil supply almost overnight, while sanctions and blocked Black Sea shipping routes hit Russian fertilizer exports too - sending prices sharply higher within days across all four commodities at once, a rare case of one event moving so many markets simultaneously.

About Urea

The most widely used nitrogen fertilizer worldwide, applied to nearly every major crop. Production is gas-intensive (natural gas is both the feedstock and main energy source), so urea prices move closely with natural gas prices — European and Asian urea spiked hard in 2022 alongside the gas price shock. China, India, the US and Russia are the largest producers.

Nutrient content: 46-0-0 (N-P-K) — standard commercial grade.

Latest World price (2026-07): -18% vs. the 5-year average, +9% vs. the 10-year average, -19% vs. a year ago.
