Indonesia's 2022 palm oil export ban — Facing a domestic cooking-oil shortage and public anger over prices, Indonesia abruptly banned palm oil exports for three weeks in April-May 2022 - cutting off the source of roughly a third of world supply overnight and sending global vegetable oil prices sharply higher before the ban was lifted.

About Palm Oil

The world's most-produced vegetable oil by volume, used in food products, cosmetics and biodiesel. Indonesia and Malaysia together supply roughly 85% of global exports, so weather, labor policy and biodiesel mandates in just those two countries move prices more than demand-side shifts do - Indonesia's abrupt 2022 export ban, imposed to contain a domestic cooking-oil shortage, briefly cut off a large share of world supply and sent prices sharply higher. Competes directly with soybean, sunflower and canola oil in food and fuel markets, and is also the focus of ongoing deforestation and sustainability scrutiny (including the EU's deforestation-free supply chain rules), which is starting to reshape who buyers are willing to source from.
